Androids are biomechanical constructs who are generally humanoid in shape, but unlike robots or artificial intelligences, androids are possessed of and animated by mortal souls.

History

Creation & Early History

Androids were first built by advanced humanoid civilizations in many parts of Desna's Path, creating them in their own image. Once the technology of their creation had spread to other peoples, however, androids began to take on a much more diverse set of forms. Humans first constructed them in birthing sites called foundries, and it is believed that this technology was developed on Golarion prior to the Gap, while others suggest that it was brought there from a distant solar system. Early models are believed to have been mostly biological in nature.

Modern Enslavement & Independence

In the Golarion System just after the end of the Gap, corporations mass-produced androids to serve as inexpensive slaves better suited for dangerous tasks. This practice largely came to an end with the Thyst Rebellion and ensuing revolts, as well as "The Automaton's Polemic", a landmark speech by Serphaeus-6. While these revolutionary acts led to the Pact Worlds recognizing androids as fully independent citizens in 154 AG and prohibiting their sale, the practice of manufacturing and indenturing androids persists in unregulated parts of the Pact Worlds.
